AGATE

Characteristics: Agate is the name given to numerous varieties of banded Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Usually banded in layers, or stripes, some varieties have "eye" markings, or specks of color, some have fossilized inclusions, and others are solid. Called the earth rainbow, the concentric bands of Agate form in nearly every color the earth can produce, including a colorless form.

Energy: Metaphysically, Agate has a lower intensity and vibrates to a slower frequency than other stones, but is highly regarded as a stabilizing and strengthening influence. The layered bands of microscopic quartz in Agate may appear delicate, they are actually very strong.  Agate is excellent for balancing emotional, physical and intellectual energy, and in harmonizing yin and yang, the positive and negative forces of the universe.

 


 

AMETHYST

Characteristics: Amethyst, the birthstone of February, is made up of crystals that grow on the inside surface of agate geodes. While the crystals themselves may grow to be several inches, the geodes containing the amethyst crystals often reach several feet in height. This majestic gemstone ranges in color from deep purple to pale lavender depending on the presence of manganese and iron. Amethyst can also appear reddish-purple or yellow-purple depending on the combination of minerals present in the clear quartz.

AQUAMARINE

Characteristics: The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones. The blueish green color is caused by iron oxides within the chemical makeup of the stone. This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique. 

Energy: Aquamarine is a Water element stone, powerful for cleansing the emotional body and opening communication. CHRYSOCOLLA

Characteristics: Chrysocolla is a carbonate copper gemstone. It has an alluring, vivid blue-green color and is often mistaken for turquoise because they share many visual similarities. It can often be found intermingled with malachite, turquoise and azurite, creating a wonderful mixed gemstone known as Eilat stone. The rich, vibrant blue and green colors of chrysocolla are reminiscent of looking down upon the Earth's surface from space.

Energy: Chrysocolla is the gentlest of stones. It's not a high-energy stone like quartz, rutilated quartz or smoky quartz, and unlike malachite, azurite and lapis, it doesn't bring buried emotions to the surface. Characteristics: Citrine is a transparent, yellow variety of Quartz, ranging in color from pale to golden yellow, honey or almost brown. Many have come to know and love this stone under the name gold topaz, or Madeira or Spanish topaz, although in actual fact it has very little in common with the higher-quality gemstone topaz except for a few nuances of color. Characteristics: Druzy's appearance can vary in regards to shape and size, but collectively, they look like thousands of tiny diamonds shimmering on a gemstone. Druzy is the geological term for quartz formed over a million years of crystallization through dissolved silica forced into porous areas of rocks by ground water causing its rapid cooling which then forms tiny crystals on the surfaces or in the cavities of the rocks.

Energy: Druzy has a positive impact on the wearer, as its calming and soothing effect can relieve stress from the mind. It dispels negative energy and cleanses the aura of the wearer. Characteristics: Emerald is the green to greenish blue variety of beryl, a mineral species. The deep green hue is owed to trace amounts of chromium and vanadium, and color is best admired under natural daylight. One of the easiest methods to identify green emeralds is to test for specific gravity (density) and hardness. Like all forms of beryl, emerald is harder than apatite, quartz and feldspar, but is slightly softer than spinel, topaz and sapphire. However, emerald is generally more fragile than other beryl, owing to its naturally included state.

Characteristics: Red garnet is one of the most common and widespread of gems and identifies with the January birthstone. The red garnet produces an intense and sensual deep red hue. The stone is found in metamorphic rocks (which are rocks altered by heat and pressure) on every continent. But not all garnets are as abundant as the red ones. A green garnet, tsavorite, also occurs in metamorphic rocks, but it’s rarer because it needs unusual rock chemistries and special conditions to form.

Characteristics: Howlite is a borate mineral comprised of irregular nodules and a monoclinic structure. Howlite has a porous texture and is also known as Magnesite. Characteristics: For starters, two different minerals are known commonly as jade. Those minerals are nephrite and jadeite. What’s more, the stones’ color is not limited to shades of green. The most familiar colors are white and cream (a light yellowish brown). Pearls are unique as they are the only gems from living sea creatures and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. Natural pearls form in the bodies, or mantle tissue, of certain mollusks, usually around a microscopic irritant, and always without human help of any kind.

Characteristics: Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Its chemical composition includes iron and magnesium, and iron is the cause of its attractive yellowish green colors. The gem often occurs in volcanic rocks called basalts, which are rich in these two elements. Peridots color comes from the basic chemical composition of the mineral itself and not from minor traces of impurities. Thus, peridot is found only in green. In fact, peridot is one of the few gemstones available that can be found only in one color, although the shades of green may vary from light yellowish to dark brownish-green.
